Bionic Self-Healing Principle

Smart Concrete with Bionic Intelligence

Bionic smart materials can sense and respond to environmental conditions, mimicking living systems. Bionic smart concrete adds intelligence to traditional concrete, enabling it to adapt, self-diagnose, and self-repair. Scientists describe the performance of bionic smart concrete with the 4S characteristics.

Advancements in Bionic Self-Healing Concrete

Bionic self-healing concrete research follows two main paths: fiber tube (capsule) + adhesive, and crystallization growth factors.

The first method mimics the healing process of blood flow in animals by injecting adhesive into fiber tubes or capsules embedded in concrete. When the concrete cracks, the capsules break and release adhesive to repair the cracks. However, this method is difficult to implement and does not allow for secondary repairs, making it challenging for commercial use.

The second method simulates the bone growth healing process by embedding crystallization growth factors in the concrete. When cracks appear, these factors crystallize to repair the cracks. This method, which can automatically repair new cracks upon water exposure, is the only commercially viable bionic self-healing concrete technology today.

The Future of Concrete: Bionic Self-Healing

Bionic self-healing concrete represents the first step in the commercialization of smart concrete, a revolutionary advancement in concrete technology. Its importance in concrete is comparable to the dominance of photolithography in semiconductors. Applying this technology in construction creates maintenance-free concrete structures, saving substantial post-construction maintenance costs.

Bionic self-healing concrete is crucial for enhancing concrete's waterproofing and durability. Traditional maintenance approaches are no longer sufficient for modern construction needs. Bionic self-healing concrete extends lifespan and actively repairs damage, making it the future trend in concrete technology.
